GETTING STARTED WITH RESEARCH
Conflicts of Interest (COI) and Commitment Disclosure (COI-C)
Conflicts of interest (COI) occur when a researcher’s personal financial interests overlap or conflict with that person’s university research. These conflicts—whether real or perceived—can undermine the integrity of IU research and sponsored programs. However, some conflicts of interest cannot be entirely avoided. Often, conflicts of interest can be effectively resolved or managed.
COIs must be submitted annually through IU’s Kuali COI System. Each person involved in research can submit their COI disclosure by searching “COI” in One.IU.edu and selecting the Conflict of Interest and Commitment (COI-C) Disclosure Form tile. From there, a disclosure takes about 5 minutes to report and is valid for one year.
